Long Hair Rottweiler

Rottweiler is a popular dog breed. Previously they were used for guarding and protecting purposes.

They are obedient, intelligent, and devoted dogs that are basically descendent of large dogs like Mastiffs.

Other than American, German, and Roman Rottweiler there is another kind of variation of the Rottweiler, which is called long hair rottweiler.

They are less common because long hair Rottweilers are not normally accepted as “true” Rottweilers. In fact, many long haired Rottweiler puppies are euthanized. Hence many people are not familiar with this dog breed.

Long haired Rottweilers also known as Fluffy Rottweilers. Their long hair trait is basically because they take those long hair genes from their parent breed.

Here is how long hair traits transfer from parents to their offspring.

Lh Gene mutation is responsible for long hair traits. In this mutation, the gene factor that stops hair growth is mutated and causes long hair growth.

Sh gene is responsible for short hair traits.

If long haired puppies have Lh genes one from each parent then they have long hair.

Lh/Lh = 100% long haired rottweiler puppies

If they inherit a Lh gene from one parent and one Sh gene from another parent then the chance of long hair offspring or short hair offspring is 50 50.

Lh/Sh= 50% of puppies will have short hair and 50% will have long hair.

If they have the Sh gene from both parents then there is 100% chance that all offspring will have short hair.

Sh/Sh= 100% short haired rottweiler puppies.

Are Long Hair Rottweilers Good Family Pets?

When trained properly from an early age they socialize easily and don’t become headstrong and stubborn.

With family and friends, they are very friendly and affectionate. With strangers, they may show a little aggression because of their protective instinct. They can’t stand loneliness.

Can a Rottweiler Have Long Hair?

As mentioned before yes, Rottweilers can have long hair when they have Lh gene which is responsible for long hair in them.

For Rottweiler to have long hair they must inherit Lh gene pair one from each parent. Generally, Rottweilers with short hair are more common.

When two long hair Rottweillers with Lh gene breed, they produce long haired Rottweiler puppies.

They are not common because their breeding is banned by AKC.

Are Long Hair Rottweilers Recognized By the Kennel Clubs?

American Kennel Club (AKC) in the United States doesn’t recognize long haired Rottweilers because AKC considers long and wavy hair of long haired Rottweiler a fault.

Due to breeding restrictions imposed by AKC, long haired Rottweiler puppies are hard to come by despite high demand.

Do Long Haired Rottweilers Shed?

Rottweilers shed hair the whole year. However, in the spring season, the shedding is more than in any other season.

Spring hair shedding is followed by new hair growth in the winter season. Old fur is restored with new and better fur. Sometimes seasonal allergies also cause hair shedding in them.

Usually, they shed their coat two times per year. There are some Rotties that shed their fur even 3 to 4 times during extreme seasons.

Other reasons that can cause shedding in them are:

  • Change in their daily routine
  • Stress
  • Allergic reactions
  • Side effect of medication
  • Skin problems
  • Ticks
  • Mites
  • Sudden changes in dog food
  • Reaction to bathing shampoos or soap
